So yesterday my kids missed the bus. I have to admit I gave my daughter cold meds before bed and she was out cold so her not hearing her alarm could have been my fault. My son…who knows. He claims his alarm “sometimes” doesn’t go off. Both his grandfather and father could sleep through an air raid so I am hoping this isn’t a genetic predisposition…you know like how only dogs can hear high pitch sounds…lol. Or perhaps it is a male thing…like how my husband can easily drown out my voice when I’m explaining why he is wrong, but suddenly has the ability to hear the whisper of a dove when I mention making an apple pie from two rooms away. The mystery of male hearing will I guess forever elude me.
Anyway…our school now has a policy that if you are late to school without a doctor’s note, you get detention. Further, if you play a sport you are not allowed to practice or participate in the game that particular day. Yes yes I know, there are so many holes that can be poked in this policy that it would put swiss cheese to shame. That being said, I support where they are going with it. I know that if a parent drives their child to school and gets a flat tire causing the child to be late, it is unfair that the child should be punished. However there are too many parents that would allow their child to mess around and be late and then cover for them so I get why there can be no gray area to this policy.
So….I have to say that my hard of hearing male child got the raw deal this time. My daughter coincidentally didn’t have practice because the coach had cancelled, which never happens. My son, had one of only 7 total games this season and was unable to play. He was less than thrilled about that and mortified at the thought of detention. My daughter shrugged it off and kind of laughed at the idea knowing she is far from a felon for being a tiny bit late to school. I am happy to report that both of them survived and served their time and today it was reported that my son was magically up before my daughter and even went in to wake her up. Apple pie anyone?
